I was shortlisted today from San Francisco!! I've been too scared to post updates because I didn't want to jinx the results, but my interviewers were super nice. One of them was a former CIR so I suspect he's here on the CIRHP. I'm super excited to meet yall! YOLOSIK!!! I'm not sure who interviewed you but I know the JET Program Coordinator in SF he's a legend congrats!

Congratulations everyone!!!!! I look forward to seeing you all at the mid year CIR conference/Mid-Year Chaos this year in fall! nikujaga there are a lot of CIRs who use CIRHP, but probably most actually aren't regular users sadly

Hi all! I got shortlisted as ALT instead of CIR. Still happy I get to go to Japan but, anybody knows any cases of ALT changing over to CIR?

Hi all! I got shortlisted as ALT instead of CIR. Still happy I get to go to Japan but, anybody knows any cases of ALT changing over to CIR? I've heard that it happens... I think at least one person one here did that, but I can't remember who it is ^^; For it to be possible, a CIR would have to quit and then you'd have to be allowed to take it.

I've also heard of it but it is quite rare I think. Some CIRs used to be ALTs on the JET program, wherein after ending their ALT contract and going back to their home country for a while etc. they reapply to JET as CIRs and get in.

Also, sometimes the CO doesn't even allow or it. One of my daigaku kouhai got in as an alt and she was thinking of switching to cir after sometime but her CO said no.

ninetyhugs -- in my placement, an ALT could apply to become the Board of Education CIR/PA! But that CIR would have to quit for the position to open (and when none of the ALTs applied one year, we got a CIR directly from overseas), so that would depend somewhat on timing. But it also really depends on your placement whether you land on one side or the other of the "considerably possible" to "definitely no chance" scale. In terms of people currently/consistently on these forums, I think sanpei might be able to provide some more insight on the ALT to CIR switch? iirc sanpei was an ALT for a couple years before switching to CIR, so it HAS happened!

Hi all! I got shortlisted as ALT instead of CIR. Still happy I get to go to Japan but, anybody knows any cases of ALT changing over to CIR? Hello! Congrats on being accepted! I applied and was accepted as an ALT, and then switched to CIR after two years. There are two cases (technically one) where you can switch: 1: luckier way: as an ALT you work for a BoE (Board of Education) that also hires a CIR. This was my case. I knew the CIR was leaving last year, so we asked our supervisor if I could take his position, and since they knew me and I had N1 they said yes (after asking the superintendent and other higher ups). They filled out some forms and that was it. I’m leaving this year and my successor is also an ALT here (he has N2) 2: harder way: First, you can only switch within your prefecture. If you get placed in a prefecture with no CIRs (I think most/if not all do though)), you most likely won’t be able to switch from what I hear. If there are CIRs, then in October or November start asking around, find the CIRs who are planning to leave, and ask their COs (contracting organizations) if they are willing to hire you. This way is harder because switching COs requires more paperwork, so they’re more likely to say no than case 1. Or some COs have specific soft requirements (like someone from England, or someone male). But hiring you means they wouldn’t have to pay for someone to come over from abroad, so that helps. Even if you aren’t able to switch, if you enjoy teaching and/ or working with kids, I think it’s worth it to come. I’m glad I was an ALT for two years! I think it helped my Japanese more than most other jobs, since I had a lot of free time to study. Also being in schools you have so many opportunities to learn Japanese, even just reading things written on the walls for different subjects is helpful, or the different textbooks, or eavesdropping on classes, or talking to other teachers. Seeing how Japanese kids learn and seeing what they learn was really interesting too. And applying for jobs in japan is a lot easier from within japan, so coming as an ALT, getting N2 or N1, saving money, and then finding a non-JET job in Japan is also a good route

Hi all! I got shortlisted as ALT instead of CIR. Still happy I get to go to Japan but, anybody knows any cases of ALT changing over to CIR? don't know the person, but there was one case in my prefecture where the kencho sent out an email blast informing all COs within the pref that a newly converted CIR was up for hire come August of that year. The info was probably first released to the kencho by the CO of that ALT though, so CO support would be quite crucial, as what everyone has been saying. That said, you might wanna consider the contract terms for ALTs and CIRs in your prefecture before making the switch. CIRs kinda tend to get the short end of the stick when it comes to nenkyuu and other stuff, so if that matters to you... (case example: I have only 10 days of nenkyuu, while the ALTs in my city have like 20 days, along with another idk how many days of cultural furlough)

And applying for jobs in japan is a lot easier from within japan, so coming as an ALT, getting N2 or N1, saving money, and then finding a non-JET job in Japan is also a good route This is basically what I would say haha. I would not recommend banking on the switch as your career choice because it’s very rare and mostly up to chance (where you get placed, who they hire, how many years the CIR plans to stay in the role, who happened to have better Japanese than you and beat you out for the role that year) That said it can happen, I think it frequently accompanies a change to a PA role as well which has more cat wrangling and I think that’s not a good fit for everyone. But if you make it over, IMHO ALT is a more fun job and you can still study up, take N1 and get the same level of job as a former CIR. I’ve had former ALTs and former CLAIR PCs doing the same post-JET job as me and if you make the most of your time I think you can catch up easily. You can still take the translation and interpretation course as an ALT, you just wont get as much 実務 practice (which some CIRs don’t even get, hell I still suck at it) I think you should go for it! I had a blast as an ALT and knowing the school system has helped me in ways being a CIR hasn’t (learning about pop culture, how English education works, what most people’s childhoods looked like, how to janken with my feet, many useful things)

Got my result just about a week ago, shortlisted from the UK! Congrats to all who got shortlisted, fingers crossed for any alts waiting for an upgrade and don't give up to those who weren't so lucky this time around! Finishing off the rest of the paperwork is gonna be a bit tricky from within Japan, and I'm gonna have to start working on my Visa status change now but hopefully all goes well.
Is there anyone here with experience becoming a CIR from within Japan? If so, any advice on things such as how to approach the medical form and the process/timeline for changing Visa status would be fantastic.

Congratulations to everybody. Can't wait to meet up with you all in Tokyo. I'm also working on paperwork from Japan and wondering what I'm going to do with my bank account and phone and stuff, since I'm "moving" back to America for like a month before JET departure... Any advice to that end would be much appreciated. Anyway, I'm also in Japan right now, and, though I can't comment on the whole process since I'm also 途中、I can say that the medical form actually wasn't that bad. Finding a doctor who speaks, or at least can read and write English, wasn't that difficult for me, and I'm in Akita. I don't know where you are, but in any sort of biggish city, there should be someone. You're basically just getting a 健康診断、which pretty much every worker has to get once a year anyway, so it was pretty routine. The only thing that threw them off was the X-ray or tuberculosis test. But after checking with me (many times) that I only needed one or the other, I just got an X-ray and it was fine.

If so, any advice on things such as how to approach the medical form and the process/timeline for changing Visa status would be fantastic. I became a CIR from within Japan. I was already working at my CO so they kinda fast tracked everything for me. They sent the local hospital the medical form in advance so they'd know what to test me for when I went in. Because the form was in English and I only just sent a rough translation of it, the doctor just signed off on whatever I wrote tbh. I was already on the visa necessary for becoming a CIR so I didn't have to change it but I did change from a student visa to an Engineer etc visa a year prior when I first came to my CO. My CO filled out my forms for me and sent them to me (I was living in Osaka at the time) so I signed them and sent them back. I did have to go to the Sendai Immigration Bureau from Osaka bc I had to submit the papers in person. Everything went smoothly and I got my new residence card in about 2 weeks.

I applied from Germany and our process seems quite a bit different from some English-speaking countries. We had our deadline for the applications mid-February, interviews are right now in the second week of April, and the results will be released mid/end of May.

Maybe this isn't the proper place to post about this, but I'm curious to hear the opinions of other soon-to-be-CIRs on this topic.
When I was researching the CIR position, I felt a great deal of frustration at how little content there seemed to be in terms of Youtube channels and blogs dedicated to the CIR position. I know CIR erasure is real and there are way less CIRs than ALTs so maybe it's just a numbers thing, but because of this I was thinking about starting a vlog when I begin my post as a CIR.
What do you guys think of vlogging? Does anyone have experience with it? Also, what are some things you'd like for there to be videos about that there just simply aren't yet?
Some topics I've considered are: apartment/neighborhood tour, budget breakdown, how my Japanese will have improved in a certain time frame, introducing and hearing opinions from other JETs/CIRs in the area at a meetup if they want, what community involvement looks like (cooking classes, cultural experiences, etc.), etc.
Anything to add? Any thoughts? Much appreciated!!

hemena To quote more than one people, I usually just click "Quote" on all messages and then copy the code, hue acouplefruits I also thought here weren't enough CIR-centric YT videos when I was applying (and also thought of vlogging, but then didn't, haha; I know how much time it would take me to edit my videos, hue). I personally thought info on the application process for CIRs was lacking. How about you? You should probably focus on that ^^; I mostly say this because pretty much all of the topics you mention are not only not CIR-centric, but also pretty popular among J-vloggers in general, so it's really easy to find that content. I'm obviously not saying that means you can't talk about those things, though!
