Congrats on your placement Dee! Sounds like a great one. Soooo far from here though hue. And yeah, I got the full packet of everything my potential successor sent in with their application, including things like the health forms and background check. I was a little uncomfortable looking at that, so I just skimmed by those to make sure there was nothing that stuck out as being an issue, but didn't look closely. Hope to see more placements coming out soon~~ So far I've only seen US ones.

I wonder if anyone thought I was YOU SHOE when looking at my packet? Probably not. (my soup told me once when drinking that he considered rejecting me based of my picture (because I had very messy facial hair and hipster glasses) so that was fun)Oh wow I don't even know if I got accepted or not but this got me worrying 'cuz I just used a random no make-up picture I had lying around. Let's say I was looking...heroin chic.. 汗

Ha. I literally popped into a drug store after working my shift at a bookstore and it was a hotter SIATOLU summer than normal. Maybe my cuteness still explodes through sweaty passport photos.

At Pike Place. I had to deal with pushing through crowds of tourists at that time as well.

yeah, when you apply you don't realise that all your application form and everything ends up in the hands of your office, so they know A LOT about you before you arrive Oh my god now you're making me nervous because I am definitely not YOUSHOE at all...

I got an email from the Pacific Northwest JET alumni association inviting me to a pre-departure orientation, but I'm confused. It's in the middle of June, not July. Is this the thing I have to go to? Seattle may be the nearest consulate to Montana, but that doesn't mean it's actually close. It would be HUGELY inconvenient for me to get there- I'd need to fly. It also says that the alumni association "plans and offers" the orientation for new JETs. Does this imply that it's a separate, optional thing?

That orientation (if it hasn't changed in the past five years) is optional. The immediately pre-departure orientation, the day before you leave, is mandatory. For me, it was held at a hotel close to the airport to be convenient for people coming from far away, while the pre-pre-departure orientation was held at the consulate.

Does this imply that it's a separate, optional thing? i couldn't go to the one that my nearby AJET planned and it wasn't an issue at all because it was completely optional also i don't think you should feel too bad about missing it either because i think those ones tend to be very heavily ALT focused, so some of the info just won't apply to you

My memory of the one I attended is that there was a mix of general "living in Japan" stuff and ALT-specific stuff. I dunno if you've been here before but you are a CIR so there is a very good chance of that. I'm sure you will be absolutely fine if you miss it.

I'll be at the UK one in July ^^
We have over 70 applicants already so there's even people on a waiting list!
Much better than the turn out last year of 10 people....
It's gonna be fun!

Yeah if it was close to me I'd want to go- to meet other new JETs if nothing else. Seattle is an 8 hour drive from where I live though, so nope. CaptainSeery I ryugakued just chiba of tokyo for an academic year, so it's good to know I won't be missing out on important info.

I think I went my year because I wanted to meet new JETs too (and because I was close to the consulate at the time) but in the end, everyone is so spread out that no one I met there I actually kept in contact with or saw after I got to Japan.
And between pre-departure orientation, Tokyo orientation, and prefectural orientation, you're going to be all oriented out soon enough.

I met a guy who graduated from there recently, he's an English teacher at one of the high schools here (actually I'm going to Makuhari with him and the ALT tomorrow, hue)

And if it doesn't, at least you will get to spend two days relaxing and not worrying about it

What was your deadline for the reply form? It should come by that date, but the consulate might have to wait until everyone's forms are in. I know other consulates are about May 25 or 26, which is right at the same time that we here are allowed to start contacting our successors directly.
