Ok, I just found out that we got it too, but my JPA never gave it to me, nor did she cc me in the e-mail in which she sent it to all the Love Knowledge COs

Yeah they're trying to send it to all JETs via their COs as part of the strengthening-the-relationship thing. So your JPA should have shared it with you as your CO, if not because you're a PA. They're going to change the password next year, they said.

When my JPA first got it, and forwarded it to all COs, the following conversation happened: Me: So, did you send it out to us three (CIRs in my office)...? JPA: Why? Me: ....because we're JETs too? JPA: OH RIGHT, I forgot! I guess at 取りまとめ団体, they kinda just forget that the CIRs they have are also JETs too, because they're too busy taking care of all the other COs. It was kinda funny.

I'VE GOTTA QUESTION FOR MAH PA BUDS.
So I just realized that the JET Programme Forums (the official one) is completely down now and I can't access the PA forums anymore. I was trying to look for the SDC-relalted threads because I know there were quite a few good ideas about what other PAs did for their SDC.
I won't be doing a presentation at the SDC this year (YESSSSSSS!!!!!!! I am incredibly happy about this) but I WILL be MCing for the two-day conference and also I have to lead the lesson idea exchange & Q&A session - basically a two-hour slot to do whatever. So I'd like to think of something useful this year for the ALTs, if possible, and not just leave it as a two-hour group discussion.
This may be a long shot but does anyone happen to have any SDC-related materials from the PA forums? Or somewhere else?

Sorry, ever since Love Knowledges falling-out with JET around 5 years ago, PAs here have had zero involvement with SDC.
Municipal ALTs still attend it, but it's done completely by the BOE
I guess I should be thankful?

So guys....
Who all here does individual personal visits to their JETs?
Former JPA says that my great predecessor used to do it and maybe I should do it too, but since my predecessor DIDNT, I have no clue how to go about it or how necessary it is? He said maybe sometime around December would be best, as that's when people are thinking about whether to recontract or not....
With our only 13 JETs it's probably a lot more feasible than for most of you guys, but....

To check up on whether they're alive and taking care of themselves okay? It may be feasible with that number of JETs but I don't think it's that...necessary... I personally think that doing so would probably make the ALTs think they can rely on the PA for anything and everything. :S

I mean I don't know how you'd do it; if they're all employed by one BOE and if you can get a certain day or two to kind of do an interview with each of them in one sitting then that might be fine, but I really don't know if you, as just another JET, should really be going around making sure everyone's getting used to Japan and all.

I don't do visits to JETs but the ALT PA (A high school teacher) visits the other high schools, inspects a lesson and gives them feedback on what they did.
If I was to do this I would tear all of em to shreads.
But seeing as how you have primarily CIRs in your pref it would be weird I think. CIRs (not all, definitely not all *cough* French CIR * cough*) tend to be much better at living here than ALTs (most of whom are great amazing people etc. etc.)

Like, the talks would probably revolve around bbchan and nerd stuff, but the fact that KENCHOU CIR IS ALWAYS WATCHING is taking an interest might make the peeps here take us and our proposals a little more seriously (wishful thinking). But honestly, making them see that JET is actually a big thing and that we have contacts and shit could be a god thing. NANIYORI it would be good for us to kibuntenkan. Call up, schedule a visit, I'll reserve a meeting room for you!

Shimanchu, your predecessor came once on my first year, but didn't on my second year. He just asked if everything was ok, if I had any paticular problem or issues, what my job consisted of and such stuff. As we are very few JETs and nobody seems to be particularly problematic, he thought it was unuseful to do the same the following year, and just sent an email to tell us to contact him in case we needed help (maybe, maybe he didn't even send an email, I don't remember) But listen to Sorafi, she's the current CIR and knows better

Here the PAs do individual visits to all the new ALTs, in around December/January. We have a lot of ALTs (40ish new ones every year) so it takes a while... As an ALT it was nice to talk to the PA even though I didn't actually have any worries or anything, but he was just an awesome guy. And it was kind of nice because all of the teachers were making a big deal about a visitor from the KENCHO and I felt like they started taking me a little more seriously.
So, uh... as an ALT it's nice. That's all I can say.

So I'd like to think of something useful this year for the ALTs, if possible, and not just leave it as a two-hour group discussion. This may be a long shot but does anyone happen to have any SDC-related materials from the PA forums? Or somewhere else? What we've started doing for lesson idea exchange is a science-fair style thing called "Poster Presentations", where a bunch of ALTs make a poster about a lesson activity and present for 10 min to a small group. This works because: + everyone gets to choose which lessons to see, so no one complains that it wasn't relevant to them + ALTs prepare lessons so you don't have to prepare content + we have each presentation repeat twice, for 6 rounds total--that way presenters can see presentations too. But you have more people so you may have to adjust accordingly. + can cover more types of lessons/age ranges/etc. + works better if you make a form for people to fill in their lesson plan, then we put it in the booklet for everyone to read and take home easily + posters add a visual that doesn't require technology (avoiding possible technology problems) + add breaks in between each time slot and it will eat up your whole two hours while you walk around and mingle - lots of work in the beginning to explain how it works, but much easier once people understand it - difficult to evaluate. Always a びtch to format on the survey. If you have a ton of presenters you could have them evaluate it as a whole to save yourself the headache, but individual assessment can be done--I can send you a copy of our form if you want. If you're going to do Q&A, our big thing in recent years has been guided discussions with well-planned groups. Basically you put a bunch of discussion questions in your booklet/on a powerpoint and have people discuss those (ex. How do you bounce back after setbacks/stay motivated? What productive things do you/can you do on weekdays after work? What is one specific technique you've used/can use to break the ice with someone?)--keeps people productive, positive, and feels like less of a free-for-all, also it lets you cover work and non-work topics without being awkward or all over the place. If you mix up the groups by area, grades taught, and years on the program, you can give everyone a good 刺激 and perspective-check without having to know everyone's personalities. I have a lot of random stuff on my comp/notebooks about SDC so feel free to PM me for more. Also OK I guess the forum is down for forever... by the way I made a PA FB group for anyone who is a PA including ALT PAs.

If you already have good boundaries about what you can and can't do in place, you could do it just to check in, talk about recontracting, etc. I remember someone presenting at a past conference about watching classes and then giving the JTE & ALT a place to talk about how they work together and get feedback (the presenter stressed it was important to be clear that the PA was not evaluating anyone). The problem is no one ever talks about visiting CIRs, and even I can't think of how that would go... but if you just keep it to JET stuff like recontracting I guess it would be the same as anyone else. I think that's one of the benefits of having a small number of JETs in your CO, though. We don't do them here in Thousand Leaves but I think it would be a cool way to build community, create work for yourself, and travel around in a koyosha.
