Hey, can someone who's JPA is coming ask them to grab an extra copy of handouts etc for presentations they attend for me to give to my JPA who becamed cannot go? I think my JPA is only going for the first day, but if that would be helpful I can ask and I don't suppose she would mind (she's very lovely). Also shachou 's successor and I will be presenting in the workshop (about housing) twice because they didn't have enough people(?) pls come and make occasional eye contact for moral support and ask questions (it is apparently q&a focused) hue whut... she's doing it twice? How do they not have enough PAs? so she's talking about furniture with you and then more on housing?

I'd send out feelers to whoever runs the KEN's SDC and see what they do at their SDC/what they'd think about allowing your city's ALTs to participate. I know one sticking point with our SDC is that since it is put on primarily by and for the KEN ALTs, most of the content is SHS-focused -- which is fine for most of our designated city ALTs, but the municipal ALTs are exclusively EHS/JHS, and they want more stuff geared toward them, sometimes without understanding why the the KEN BOE (which deals only with SHS) doesn't "do anything" for them. (...sigh. I try to explain so many times.) I am sure this process would be smoothed/more acceptable if your city was willing/able to make a monetary donation on behalf of your ALTs to help with things like renting the SDC venue, but that would involve a whooooooooole lot of budgeting and paperwork. on the other hand, if you set one up yourself, that will also involve a whole lot of budgeting and paperwork, sooooooooo.... GOOD LUCK.

G-Rex I checked with my JPA and thus far we've only gotten documents related to deadlines for 4月来日, and JPA thinks the formal documents will come within the next few weeks. Usually the gap between getting the official notice of deadlines and the deadlines themselves are only a few weeks. Past deadlines to submit a request to change COs, host prefecture/designated city, or job type: Oct 25 (2013) Oct 17 (2014) Oct 16 (2015) Usually we've gotten the official documents in mid/late September and I've informed my JETs of them by the end of the first week of October. If I get any people considering before we get the current NENDO's official docs, I send them the previous years and tell them to start preparing ASAP, then adjust as necessary for the current NENDO. Edit: some COs may make this deadline earlier so they can submit any documents to/ask any questions of the TORIDAN before the official deadline.

I used to get e-mails asking about ALT-to-CIR transfer opportunities EXCEPT FOR to my position (PA) so I was kind of happily relieved when my successor (whom I knew wanted my job) did decide to go for it
I don't want to even imagine what could have happened if no one actually ended up wanting my job
(Disaster, that's what)

Question from one of my ALTs
Context: I am a PA by technicality and on paper only. My office (the foreign affairs division) and the BOE want me to literally do nothing. It was to the point where this ALT was coming to me because their (non JET) ALT PA went MIA and there was no outlined support network. I then had my super call the BOE and they had no idea who I was or why the ALT was coming to me.
It seems like the BOE doesn't actually want to support the ALTs and are only doing the bare minimum so that on paper they "are doing everything they are supposed to"

I am not a PA, but I came back from SHUCHO to a bunch of emails, one of which was a request for me to go help a (no-Japanese) ALT talk to a company about a bill.
The email had my name, but don't know the ALT involved, so it is maybe a misunderstanding on the part of the Japanese person who wrote the email, and they wanted our CIR PA, who works in the same town as me. Maybe I should forward it to him?
That said, I'm totally happy to help if it's allowed- so long as it counts as work. Free time? Not so much. Do you think I could use work time for this? (As I'd actually like to be the PA in the future, this would be a good experience.)

Cantamen -- consult your supervisor? give your CIR/PA a call and discuss it with him? Only do it if it's for work, though, as soon as you let one of those kind of requests slide as "not work" you'll never be able to go back. I need those kinds of boundaries as a PA in order to stay sane. (It's different when an ALT I'm close with asks me personally/outside of work because then it's not in my capacity as a PA, but I wouldn't do it for anyone at the "relative stranger" or "acquaintance" level if it's not counted as work.) If the Japanese person who requested it is a colleague of the ALT (like a JTE or something) it should count for work, tbh.

I have to wonder why they didn't ask the actual PA though... I guess it's fine? More TUUYAK experience. I have no idea who the Japanese person is in relation to the ALT. They just have a signature at the end with their family name and ka.
