I agree completely. Also never heard of ALC before so that makes sense!

ALC is a fantastic resource for translating. It's the first place I go, because they list a whole bunch of options for each word and I can play around with which one I think fits best in each context.

"traditional home-made foods" = home-made foods that are traditional or "traditional, home-made foods?" = traditional food that are home-made either? the above is how i read the connotations (that ever so vaguely change) but yappari どっちかというと what Nurkiras said

ah they did it again too with "fresh, locally caught"
something about those commas just seems wrong to me...

Yes good catch on the nuance Miscreative! I just figure the second option is much more likely. And "fresh, locally caught" seems fine to me, I translated variants of that like 5 times yesterday.

homemade is fine without the hyphen.
edit: also i presume it's fresh, locally caught fish? if so you can make it locally caught fresh fish if you really don't like the comma but it is correct

homemade is fine without the hyphen. i can never remember also. ditto on the "fresh, locally caught" sounds fine

yeah if it were something I was writing (like my column or whatever) rather than a native check I would use homemade but I think it's fine with the hyphen too. I guess on that note I'll leave in the commas...I'd never write it that way but I guess it's not incorrect. edit: another question: does "xx City, Where Agriculture Was Raised in Tradition" sound weird to you? The Japanese is 伝統に育まれた農業も盛んなxx市 I changed the comma after city to a dash, and I was thinking about changing "Raised in Tradition" to "Born from Tradition"

yes, it does sound weird to me. I like your changes. An even bolder change (that actually reflects the Japanese order of words a bit more ): "Agriculture Born of Tradition - xx City"

"Research done since 1997 shows that the number of species of submerged plants has decreased, resulting from a decline in the transparency of the water and a transformation of the environment in the bottom of the lake."
do you spot what i spot or am i just crazy?
EDIT "Research done since 1997 shows that the number of species of submerged plants has decreased, resulting from a decline in the transparency of the water and a transformation of the environment of the bottom of the lake."
A or B?

hmmm B has a lot of "of"s but it is better than A. Just a stylistic thing, B is totally fine grammatically while A is not.

Part of Governor's speech talking about "demographic bonus":
When then "productive population" is twice or more of the "youth population" and the "elderly population", combined, the society is vigorous.
I HIKKAKARU on the bold, because I feel like "twice or more than that of the", would be better, but I'm not sure why?

I agree.
I think if you take out the "twice or" the reason becomes clearer. "When the "productive population" is more of the "youth population"...." is obviously wrong. You need to say "more than the" or "more than that of the."
On the other hand, "twice or more than the" also doesn't work, because then it sounds like the options are a) twice the other populations or b) more than the other populations (not twice and then some more.)
So I think "twice or more than that of the" is the only option.

The "statue of the principal idol" part is odd; maybe try "The main statue of the guardian deity of children" "The main guardian deity of children statue" (not my favorite option) "(main) standing statue of the guardian deity of children"

トド、カリフォルニア(sic)、ゴマフアザラシの泳ぐ姿を上からだけでなく、ガラス窓ごしに水中の様子もご覧になれます。
You can watch Steller sea lions, California sea lions, and spotted seals swim around- either from above or below through the glass of the tank.
context: updating the english pamphlet for our aquarium

Nurkiras i am literally asking you all to be picky. its a big tank. that is open air so you can view it from "below" where you are looking thru the side of the tank or you can watch it from the stands above. so... "You can watch Steller sea lions, California sea lions, and spotted seals swimming around, either from above or through the glass of the tank below."
