Its the most wonderful time of the year!
移住定住まちづくり室 ?? The suggestion I received was Settlement and Regional Development Office 山岳遭難・火山対策室 - Office for Mountaineering and Volcano Accidents Prevention and Response
Women's Active Workforce Participation Division (I just want to clean this up but Im not sure how. Division has to come last.)

移住定住まちづくり室 -- maybe "Residency and Regional [Local?] Development Office"?
I have to think on these....

"Settlement" makes it sound like people are going out into the hinterlands to build a colony or something.
will check my 県庁's division names and come up with suggestions.

Thanks guys!
地域スポーツ課- I am thinking Sports Promotion Division (it is about promoting sports at a local level) 競技スポーツ課- I am thinking of Competitive Sports Division (I think its about attracting sports to the pref. Should I change it to reflect that.)

Thanks guys! 地域スポーツ課- I am thinking Sports Promotion Division (it is about promoting sports at a local level) Grassroots Sports Division? I love me some grassroots. They might get miffed since it doesn't have "promotion" in it though (man I hate the word "promotion").

Sometimes I use 'Community' for 地域. Generally I turn まちづくり into 'community development'.

Community development is nice! Thanks.
I actually prefer promotion over grassroots in the context keio but yeah promotion is definitely overused.
Now my biggest remaining hurdle is 女性の活躍推進課
Do you think I could swing it as Female Empowerment Division. It would be the coolest of the 課 if they let me?

I think "Women's Empowerment Division" sounds more ばdあss, go with that.

Okay this technically isn't a new 課 name but it's related to 組織 so whatever. What are your translations for 係 and 班?
Up until now (well, okay, since last year when I managed to get them to change 課 to Division), we've used 'Section' for 係 and 'Unit' for 班, but apparently from now on they're slowly going to get rid of our 係 and change them all to 班. Is it weird for the next step below 'Division' to be 'Unit'? 'Section' sounds more natural to me but I also have no 感覚 for this sort of thing. Are Section/Unit on the same level?

We use 担当 and translate it as "Group." So if a hypothetical group was the 国際交流担当 it's be the "International Exchange Group." "Unit" sounds weird to me ("unit of measurement," "unit" as used to mean "a chunk of related lessons" in American schools), so if it's a choice between "Unit" and "Section," I'd probably go for "Section."

I don't think "unit" is weird in that context...K-9 Unit? Special Victims Unit? G-Unit?
Then again I guess it would primarily apply to first responders or at least people who do things more dangerous than city hall employees. so "section" is probably the safer bet

Okay but the problem is that some 係 will still exist, and since they're technically different we need different names for them. So what would the other one be? Group sounds kind of like it's a giant corporation or something to me.

I have 女性活躍推進課 as well and I rather like "Women's Empowerment Division". I might try to use that. I ALSO have 女性の輝く社会推進室 which I am not enjoying. I looked through various official documents from Abe on government sites and found "Creating a Society where Women Shine" used a few times... Direct translations are lame, but man. I don't know WHAT they're really trying to say honestly. Any ideas?

it's not terribly weird as a buzzword, but seeing it in an actual division/office name is pretty lulz

Right? It's such a "/picardfacepalm" moment.
I like Equal Opportunities for Women Office. Thanks!
Maybe "Women's Equal Opportunities Office"?
Hm.

The Sparkly Women's Society already exists. I spend too much time around it as it is (苦笑). (But people who are not women are totally welcome!)
Sapen's "Equal Opportunities for Women Office" sounds good. Do you already have a 男女平等 office? As long as none of the current names overlap I think you should be fine. Sadly, they probably wouldn't let you use "Women's Empowerment Division" for the 課 and "Women's Empowerment (Consultation?) Office" for the 室. What does the 室 do as opposed to the 課? Is it a subdivision of the 課 or what?

Hmm. There is a 男女共同参画推進課 "Gender Equality Promotion Division". But it's in a totally different 局 so it should be ok.
As for the ones I'm working on, they are connected.
女性活躍推進課 is a sub division of the 女性の輝く社会推進室.

I wonder what they actually do.... do they promote women equality or empowerment at all?
They could be an office solely meant to promote the buzzword and PR material ???

Yeah, I'll ask to make sure the translation actually represents something they do.

Question: is Comprehensive Education Division ok for 総合教育課 (non-BOE division which is supposed to include every type of education including school, 生涯学習 etc). Was wondering if General Education Division would be better instead. But we already have "Comprehensive Education Center" for 総合教育センター so I'm curious to see if anyone has strong opinions either way. General Education Division works for me. We have a division like that but its listed as part of the BOE even though its in the Kencho so we call it the General Affairs Division (because it is always addressed to the BOE).

Yeah if only it were within the BOE D: Also I looked on wikipedia and it said general education only refers to secondary education and now I'm doubting myself sigh

Hey peeps, how would you translate 組合室? I know 組合 could be either union, guild, or association (?) but I don't know which one I should use, and I'm also unsure of whether to use "office" instead of something else >_< (just a few rooms down from the 組合室 is the 印刷室, which is just "Printing Room" - because it isn't really an office at all)
