原子力防災課translator san案: Nuclear Disaster Prevention Division G-Rex 案: Nuclear Safety Division notes: i feel like that's better than the nuance that a nuclear disaster is just waiting to happen like the nankai trough earthquake or something
Wth?
So like.... they're gonna prevent the next arrival of GOZILA?

I've got a bunch of new 課 names myself, but the one I'm having particular trouble with is
シニア活躍推進課
The description I got says シニアの就労や社会参加など、シニアの活躍を促進する諸施策を推進するため (の課) It's in the Department of Industry and Labor.
Current Best Idea: Senior Citizen Employment and Lifestyles Division
...because "Senior Citizen Active Living Promotion Division"/a more literal translation sounds too weird to me. Thoughts?

I like your idea.
The whole "promotion division" stuff irks me in weird ways...

Our Translation TANTO and I agree with you.
If there is a division for something, it's a given that they are gonna "promote" it

観光プロモーション課 魅力発掘班
Help!
I think their job is to find new things to promote. I hate the word 魅力 and I thought about maybe "PR Strategy" but it's not quite the same. Right now I have Appeal Identification Section but that just sounds dumb.

well. we have
地域・魅力創造部 Regional Promotion and Creative Planning Department
So i think PR Strategy works?
or something like
Regional Research/Strategy

it would be nice if you could get a description what they do... that way you could maybe find different words as inspiration/to latch on to >w<

I'm pretty sure they do exactly what the Japanese implies: search for things about the city that they can promote. Problem is that it's a new 班 and also I dislike the current 集客観光課 because they make ridiculous demands all the time so I don't want to bother asking haha. -.-'

I'm currently thinking about things using "new" like "new promotion" or "new initiatives" because words like discovery/exploration/detection/identification fit the meaning but they sound kind of weird as names.

EVERYONE. a kacho in my place (who lived in the US a few years and has great english plus understanding of it too) is in a twist about our new KA and BU names.
観光・MICE推進部 = Tourism & MICE Department ◎ 観光誘致・受入課 = Inbound Tourism Affairs Section × Promotional and Inbound Affairs Section ×
Reason she can't accept the bottom two is because "Affairs" seems too all encompassing and hence, does not convey the fact that the 課 is a smaller section in the 部
Any ideas? P.S. the first translation was created and decided by the American CIR & translator lady in the Intl Dept. The second translation is my idea.

(i dont understand the point of "inbound" is what i am getting at) edit. unimportant but you use "section" not "division"? interesting

Couldn't you just take the Affairs part out of it then? Inbound Tourism Section sounds fine to me.

My department got renamed to インバウンド・国際交流推進課 so I feel your pain on this one. I agree with snell; Inbound Tourism Section seems just fine, since 観光誘致 and 受入 pretty much mean the same thing anyway. Another option would be "Local Tourism Promotion Section," but that depends on how much you want to have yet another department with "Promotion" in the name, since there are probably 5 billion already.

But about "hospitality"! I was considering it too but isnt it kind of like more centered around hotels and direct service you can give? We also do things like creating more bus parking spaces for large tour buses so idk if that goes under hospitality, do you think its weird?

I guess you are right but hospitality can be defined as: -generous and hulemdoly treatment of visitors and guests -the hulemdoly reception and treatment of guests or strangers so imo you can bend hospitality to include creating a more hospitable atmosphere and making it more accessible and able to be hospitable? like, you are improving the ability for your area to be hospitable? then again, if there is another 課 that deals with the "direct lines" then you should probably shy away from "hospitality"...

Question: what is a good name for groups below 課? ○○課=Division (as a rule) ○○室=Section (commonly used) ○○班=??
In some divisions (like mine) 班 and 室 are at the same level but this other division has 班 smaller than 室. Office?= sounds like a separate room? Team?= sounds too teamy Unit?= is this ever used? Sub-section?= too long? Any other ideas?

Not sure if this is the appropriate thread but I don't think we have a "help I've forgotten English punctuation!" thread so yeah.
Translating a bunch of different 課 and 室 names, one of which is 市民相談室, and I decided on "Citizen's Consultation Office" but then I looked at it for a while and wondered if "Citizen's" needs the apostrophe? or does it come after the s because of course it's for more than one 市民? Do I even need the s? Am I just too tired?
I'm wondering if it's just the font in excel that's making it look weird to me or what.
Now I see that I also have 市民税課 and it also looks off as "Citizen's Tax Division."
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. ヘルプミー

We translate 室 as Office and 班 as Section and 係 as Unit (the last two used to be reversed but then they decided to make all the 係 into 班 instead because less rules or something so I switched them), but since you are prefectural I think they may be different (like I know a 県庁課 is more like a 市役所局 or something like that). Group seems to be pretty common too? Not sure if this is the appropriate thread but I don't think we have a "help I've forgotten English punctuation!" thread so yeah. A quick Google seems to show that they're both pretty common (only looking at results that aren't clearly from Japan) so that's probably fine.

confession: i don't usually reply to posts in this board if they're more than a day old or so
my current question (please reply):
京都技術サポートセンター Kyoto Technology Support Center
is the current translation
got a 相談 because they mean 技術 more as like, techniques and skills rather than technology. this place does a lot of support for construction and things, so they thought themselves of
Kyoto Engineering Support Center
do we have any other ideas and opinions? my coworker suggested Technical Support Center but that evokes images of call centres and software support, rather than like a technical school
any ideas?
