How much free time is there each night? My bf is considering meeting me in Tokyo but it seems like we won't have enough time to be together to make it worth the trip for him, and I wonder if it might just be better for him to visit me in rock hand after I'm settled. The only thing is Tokyo is way cheaper/more convenient for him to visit than rock hand is. どうしようかな (Also, i don't want to be that guy at orientation that's like "bye losers" and spends zero time with the other JETS) (But I also haven't seen my bf in a year) Yesss I too would like to know how much free time we will have. I have hulemdos in Tokyo who want to meet, but I definitely don't want to isolate myself from day 1.

It's been a few years since my own TO experience so I'm a bit hazy, but I believe orientation only goes until until like 5PM and the evenings are free for you to do what you would like. Some embassies will host a dinner/reception/something for new JETs (but not the US because there are too many, so I don't know what that's like), and a lot of prefectural PAs will invite people out for dinner, etc. so you can get to know other people near you as well, but generally speaking the time is yours to spend as you wish.

You'll have plenty of free time in the evening. Granted it's been a few years since my orientation so it may have changed in the intervening period, but I would still expect to be done by 5 or 6 pm on whatever night doesn't have the welcome reception (which you can feel free to walk out of whenever you please). I wouldn't worry too much about missing out on socializing with other JETs - there will be plenty of chances to get to know other JETs who have been assigned to your prefecture.
Depending on where you are and the nature of your position you may only find yourselves in Tokyo once a year at most. Enjoy yourself!

I attended in 2015. I was pretty miserable because of the jet lag, especially as the afternoon sessions started. You can not connect to wifi in the nice room that you get and they give you tiny water glasses that this one man refilled for you - so I would recommend grabbing a water bottle or whatever from a convenience store to rehydrate. It really helps with focusing. The 翻訳・通訳・ビジネスマナー seminars are quite exhausting so don't beat yourself up over having trouble in it. Also try hard not to compare yourself to others. There will be some people there who will have zero jet lag and they are functioning at their complete best, while others, like me, was just wanting to go flop in bed and never speak. Also, you won't have any idea what your job is going to be like until you get there, so just try to make connections with fellow CIRs, try to pay attention and use the time as just a 日本語能力 warm-up. You will probably get better training at the Mid-Year Conference held in November. The bathrooms were the best. The hotel was super nice.
hue, I find myself usually needing to remind myself of this whenever I hang with large groups of CIRs.
Y'all are just so effin YUUSYUU

This is slightly off-topic but I had so much fun at orientation. I was room-mates with two hulemdos from UK orientation (one of whom is Moso on the CIRHP) and our room wasn't too far from Ividia 's, who was sharing a room with another of our hulemdos from UK orientation. I remember getting the giggles practising handing over business cards over and over again. And going out to buy hairdriers. And eating lots and lots at the buffet. 懐かしい I don't know if anyone else has said something similar, but when I met up with my supervisor and the ALTs traveling to my prefecture, I was called on to interpret for the ALTs and essentially start my job then and there, hue (back then we only had one CIR PA - who was my pred, who obviously had finished her job so I had to do it). So... there is a small chance you may have to do something like that (but probably a very minuscule chance). My advice is that queues for the toilet in between orientation classes are stupidly long, so use the 和式 toilets as there wasn't normally a queue for them (either that or barge out of the room and run to the toilets the second the class ends in order to beat the queue hue).

Or the upstairs toilet that only the CIRs know about. And the PAs.

Hey new CIRs! How many of you will be in Group A vs Group B? I know Group A usually has all the Aussies, the Irish, and half the Americans.... (And the Brits go to Group B?) Why, you ask? Because if you are in Group A, you will definitely get to meet your sparkly senpai at Tokyo Orientation (during the early afternoon of the second day, I believe), so definitely feel free to tell me who you are on the forums if you'd like! (I think most of you may not have seen me post very much -- I'm on forum hiatus for most of the summer bc workload -- but here I am...! I appear most in the book club thread. I can also be relied upon to talk about sparkly musicals ad nauseam. And occasionally I try to give useful advice, haha~) Anyway, let me know so I can look forward to seeing you!! (Group B people, I'll meet you at the Mid-Year Conference at the end of November -- I'll be on a 海外出張 that week. ;-; I'd rather meet all of you though) Attempting to tag the new CIRs here (sorry if I missed you or tagged you incorrectly!): zdaradara23 Mumblesnore Honey elib Hokuto nikinee wasejou ことしも魚ろしく kira TrickPhoenix edit to add shanshan310 because I think you're also a new CIR...?

I wasn't sure when I was tagging everyone who was a veteran CIR but a relatively recent forum poster vs a brand new CIR because I, um, didn't have the time to go check and just tagged anyone who came to mind.... orz See you at Mid-Year Chaos though? 笑 (infiltrate and crash Tokyo Orientation I'll cover for you)

I'm a leaving CIR, but I'll still be at both Group A and B. Probably no chance to meet everyone unless you're coming to Hokkaido, but I'll be watching you. ┃電柱┃_・)ジー

HELLO I WILL BE IN GROUP B. I will be presenting. So I will not be hard to miss. I may or may not mention the forums - we'll see how CL.AIR likes me mentioning it.
So if you are there, please, talk to me after the presentation! It would be nice to meet you! I know when I came, I was sooo excited to meet other forumers at ori (and I saw all the CL.AIR senpai and thought THEY might be forumers) but I was too shy and scared to ask. So I would understand if you're shy ^^
My trip is 日帰り from Hokkaido though =_____________________= uuuugggghhhh.

From previous experience (I was 2014) you can definitely meet whoever you want to meet on at least one of the nights. So basically, TO is over 2.5 days right. You arrive the first day and you have that first night free. But most people would either CRASH that night from fatigue or hang out with people they are familiar with - I say pick this night to meet hulemdos if you are not too tired. The second night you would be hopefully less tired and you can perhaps have a weeeee bit more time. However, I would think that you would have made some hulemdos already so you might hang out with JET people this night? ANYWAY just my two cents but I think you can meet you bf mumblesnore for two nights at least! (: (you should even for a bit because omg one year? it would be worth it hahahaha)

It's awkward because while he's Japanese, he lives and works in China, so it's not like I can just hop on a train and see him during most of the year. And not only is Tokyo way cheaper/more convenient for him to go to than a remote village in rock hand-ken, I also don't think it would be a great first impression for me to have another guy shacking up with me right as soon as I arrive. It really does seem like Orientation is the best option for us to have our ~reunion~. I just hope he doesn't get dissapointed with how busy I'll be At least he'll have the two pokemon centers to keep him busy :'D

You don't have to hang out with other jets if you don't want to either. I met hulemdos two of the nights and hung out with other Irish jets on one of the nights. There is definitely lots time in the evening to see him. Random jets you meet at orientation you probably won't see again cos they are far and those in your area you will get to see in your area
