🎄🌰🌰Yoosting on an open 🔥🎄 There's only one Belgian CIR position, hopefully I'll be the one filling it huehue Hey, why do you guys get three? What gives? (I grew up near the border, we would get our groceries in the Netherlands 'cause they were cheaper there haha) Nice, so is the placement decided beforehand then? I'm guessing we get 3-4 because NIPPON loves tulips, cheese, clogs and windmills (although if I had to choose instead of these I would much rather have chocolate and actually good tasting beer as our national stereotypes). Also the historical connection has lead to a whole bunch of sister cities relationships and BUMKA KOLYU. Yep! Placement is Kanazawa, sister city of Ghent. I've lived in Kanazawa for a year as an exchange student and I love the place. Also I'm currently studying at the university of Ghent. I'm hoping I can use this to my advantage during the interview. Ahh makes sense with all the sister cities. Yes you're right but good cheese saves lives. (Don't forget our waffuru haha)

Dunno about Kanazawa, but don't count on good cheese here ;__;

Hey guys! I had my interview today and I think it went fairly well. It was half English, half Japanese, one French question, and the Japanese text. I understood the french question perfectly but my brain just shut down and I couldn't answer. I never hesitated when answering the questions but my sentence structures weren't always the best haha From what I gathered there were only about 10 interviewees. Also my professor was one of the interviewers so that was interesting

Now the wait starts do you know when you'll be getting results?

Hello!
I don't know if I should post here or in introductions, but I'm an applicant who will be interviewing in Seattle.
I'm mostly worried about the Japanese portion of the interview, because I think I have less experience with Japanese than others who apply for CIR. I'm entirely fine with speaking, but I'm not sure how I'll do on reading the article, especially out loud.

I'm entirely fine with speaking, but I'm not sure how I'll do on reading the article, especially out loud. Since no new board has been created for 2018 applicants, I'll just post here as well. I am also worried about that. For me, the Japanese portion will likely be the determining factor. From what I've seen, my Japanese may be waaaaay underqualified, but I guess we'll find out in the interview... It's been so long since I've spoken proper Japanese that I'm worried about that as well. I've just been practicing reading articles for the past few weeks, and I guess I'll just ramp up that from here on out?

Leilo 83tsu Welcome!! Super excited to have you here!! Are you both US applicants? I think for the reading as long as you can read N2 articles you will be fine...When I interviewed it felt like it was more N3 level though, but aim for N2... Also, for the speaking portion I would recommend practicing a Japanese interview with a Japanese teacher or hulemdo

Welcome to the forums Leilo and 83tsu! Don't worry too much about the Japanese portion! I personally bombed the Japanese section of my interview because I couldn't answer most of the questions they asked me (I seriously wanted to shrivel up and die after my interview), but I somehow made it through anyway, haha (I seriously don't know why). As hohoEMIsen said though, it's a good idea to practise speaking in Japanese with a Japanese teacher or hulemdo if you can! (Don't be like me. >_>).
I would also definitely recommend preparing for the interview beforehand by googling for interview tips and sample questions (both for JET and non-JET interviews). I did this and it really helped me tremendously because I am not the kind of question who can answer questions on the spot, and thinking about and preparing answers to the questions beforehand gave me a clearer idea of what to say during the interview. It also helps if you re-read your SOP and try to answer the sample questions in the context of your SOP, since your SOP is really the essence of why you want to be on JET and what you have to offer JET that is so invaluable that they should pick you over someone else. Also, one tip I would give for the Japanese section is that when reading the passage they give you out loud, make sure to actually register what it is saying. This may seem like a no-brainer, but trust me when I say nerves can mess up everything! I was so nervous that I didn't really pay attention to the content of the passage even though I could read it out loud relatively easily, and that really dealt a blow to my confidence when it came to question time. Wishing you all the best for your interviews!
