Oh I guess since there are ALT-PAs too we don't really need to do that in the PA conference.
Either way, this is going to be interesting.

I've always felt that ALTs and CIRs should try and know more about what each other do, if only so we can see different perspectives of living/working in Japan (because I always think seeing things outside of your own perspective is a good thing). I'm interested in going, anyway. But I might read the description/see who is presenting it before deciding.

Ugh but listening to ALTs talk about their jobs is pretty much 90% of my social life.

Who tends to present for these things, actually? SDC was always run by 2nd-5th year ALTs in the ken, with one keynote speaker and occasionally someone else to do one or two workshops (last year we had a professor who did a Life After JET workshop which was a lot more useless than I expected because literally all he talked about was how to get a professorship teaching English at a Japanese university. The title and description were rather misleading and it pissed me off that I wasted 90 minutes on this guy. /rant)
So is this run by current CIRs? I feel like if that was it statistically at least one CIRHPer would be doing one. Is it CLAIR?

There are some presentations by CIRs (usually the 事例発表), but also those presented by professionals/MOFA/etc. But C.LAIR is the one who organizes Mid-Year Chaos, unlike SDC which I think is generally run by the PAs in each prefecture. So we've had officials from the government, people from private companies (like the guy from Timeout Tokyo last year), and then people from like 人材育成 businesses or something (like the ones who teach business manners and stuff). The CIRs who present are also chosen by CLAI.R (there's usually a 募集 for presentations).

I haven't seen the schedule, but I saw that a former CIR who I am hulemdos with (probably a lot of you know her, but she lives in Kobe) is doing a presentation so I can finally, finally give her some 大分 omiyage in return to the lovely Osaka omiyage she sent me months ago. Happiness~!

Got the scheduleeeeeeeeee. I hue'd at the 「ALTとしてCIRと分かち合いたいこと」. Did we have this last year? I don't recall this one. What does this mean? As former ALT I want to go just to see what they say.

I want to go to the one my hulemdo is presenting! I also like the look of the one about ALT and CIRs working together or whatever. As a PA who only very occasionally does school visits, doesn't help to organise SDC, and mainly knows about ALT problems from my hulemdos who are ALTs, I think it might be useful for me.

I hope they use Hamamatsu as an example in the 多文化共生 session like they did last year
(before you ask it was as a good example)

I just saw this thread so I haven't caught up yet but who else thinks all the workshops look kinda lame?
I wouldn't go to a "Things ALTs want CIRs to know," but "Things your CIR wants all of you ALTs to know" is a great theme for an SDC workshop next year.
1. If you are an American ALT you actually make more money than me
2. No I can't change your lightbulb

There's usually an explanation in the program that you get on the first day. I'm planning to read those first and then decide.

On second thought the ALT one will probably be hilarious. If it's good I might even go twice.

I figure it'll be a nice light opener.

I think the ALT-CIR presentation could be useful...
Sometimes in spite of myself I find myself getting frustrated with some queries, like about re-contracting procedures. I always think, "Well, even if you think it's unfair, it's not my responsibility." And then I catch myself that it's not fair that I reacted so grumpily and if they don't understand my job then that is a failure of mine (i.e. I didn't explain my role and job properly at orientation). Tl;dr I think I could work on my communication skills, so I'm interested in that presentation.

ザ・penguin54, isnt this the one that you were so impressed with the other year? If by impressed you mean "impressed," then no, I didn't go to that one. the one I hated was the メンタルヘルス one (where the 外務省 guy made his PPT all in English despite the presence of 非英語圏 CIRs, then proceeded to talk for an hour and a half about drugs and how Japanese people's brains react differently to crickets) I'm actually quite interested in 国際プロトコル from the title but I don't want to go if it's the same presenter as before. anyone have the Mid-Year Chaos 2013 guide/remember that guy's name? Personally I'm looking at the ALT one, VIP対応, 行政文書 cause hue, 国際プロトコル if it's a different person (otherwise PR), 情報発信, and 予算 (also hue).

Do I need to wear a suit.
I know it's probably written down somewhere on the sheets my supe gave us but I can't be arsed to look through all that.
Please help me be lazy, CIRHP, you're my only hope.

Didn't you go last year? Haha. There will be people in suits and there will also be people in not suits. For what it's worth I will probably not be wearing any suits but I will be in my slightly fancier work clothes (collared shirts/suit jackets) because I want to look nice it is a work conference.

Dont worry about it, it is science. www.onosokki.co.jp/HP-WK/nakaniwa/keisoku/brain.htmI just searched a bit and apparently there was a paper 30 years ago written by someone named Dr. Tsunoda that talked about how Japanese people use their left brain to hear and understand sounds?? Haha, this is actually pretty funny.
