what do you guys think about the word "slow food culture"? No idea what that means A culture of eating food made in a slow cooker? Of eating your food slowly? Of eating food while listening to Slow Jamz? Ok, I googled it and found out all of those were totally wrong. Oops. I think you could use it as long as you had a parenthetical section or something explaining it a little |

I always thought it referred to how the French (supposedly) take their time to eat things and how McDonalds is ruining French food culture.
At least, those are the kinds of articles I always see floating around on the internet. For all I know, it's not the French who are the most upset; they may just be the loudest in the "slow down and eat leisurely!" crowd. (Disclaimer: Never been to France. I have no idea if any of this is true. Internet browsing at its finest.)

Is "Short-Term Day Care Service" weird for 一時預かり保育施設
It's like a place in kencho where visitors and employees can drop off their kids but it's not like a regular day care service

How about temporary day care service? When I first thought of that it sounded weird, as if the service was going to shut down after a bit. But now that someone else suggests it it sounds OK. Hmm probs 考えすぎ. Thanks! |

移動総領事館 = Traveling Consulate/Traveling Consulate General? I’ve never heard it before, but the term “traveling consulate” does seem to come up in English…with a little explanation it makes sense, right? I haven’t found “traveling consulate general” used at all, though…

I've only seen mission be used to refer generally to diplomatic/consular activity, that is, the formal presence of country A in country B is country A's diplomatic mission, and often it identifies the permanent group (embassy/consulate/high comission/whatever). |

Mobile consulate it is, then! Mission is a bit different, I think—this is just a temporary consulate-like program where people can get their passports/IDs renewed and other things you would normally do at a consulate without having to go all the way to Tokyo/Osaka/etc.

We use inhabitant tax, because that's what the country uses on some official pamphlet somewhere. But if I had to choose I would say resident tax.

Yeah, in our 生活ガイドブック in the glossary section I put "inhabitant tax (also known as resident tax)" since both terms are just about equally common.

Jumping in on IC, it's pretty well understood among foreigners in Japan, but newcomers and people overseas may not get it.
Same with JCT (junction) which is where highways intersect and it's very confusing.
The most neutral way I've done is "take the ~~IC exit"/"get on the ~~highway at ~~IC"
