Hi everyone~ I'm sorry if these are dumb or repeated questions. I'm a first year CIR in quarantine now, and I'm wondering if there are any translation/interpretation resources or references you all use to increase the efficiency of your translating? Also, I just completed my first translation job, but I was wondering how you all go about getting your work proofread? I want to have a second opinion before submitting, but I can't ask my supervisor or the other folks at the kencho, so I'm not sure who to ask...any suggestions? Thanks so much! Hey tearight! Welcome to the forums. First and foremost, I'd look through some of the other threads in this area of the forums. You could start here for interpretation stuff and here for translation stuff. In particular, miscreative has a good post here with translation resources. I know that I personally use linguee.com often because it's a database of translations, as well as weblio and some other online dicitonaries. In regards to getting 英訳 proofread, I think many of don't have any other native speakers to ask for this (when I was on JET my supervisor/kakali long would look at them, but they weren't native English speakers). Because of this, I often found that waiting a day (or even just a few hours), and then going back and rereading it with a fresh set of eyes was my best bet, and usually helped me produce higher quality translations. If you're asking about proofreading for 和訳, then I would also suggest waiting a day and taking another look, but for both my current job and when I was on JET, my supervisor or some other native speaker would always make revisions before we published anything (I think many other CIRs have the same experience). Do you have a tanto you can ask to take a quick look? That's generally how I've heard it works for most CIRs. Sorry I can't really provide much more advice besides that. I hope this helps! This is super helpful! Thanks so much for the quick response

I have a couple of dictionaries that I use like weblio and jisho(dot)org. Hokuto linked to some good recourses as well. As for proof reading, like Hokuto mentioned a lot of us don't have anyone in the office that can proof read/understand English translations. I also prefer to finish the translation, then wait a couple of hours to a day then go back and re-read it myself to check for errors of anything that sounds off. If it's for a Japanese translation I just ask my co-workers or 課長 to look it over for me. If there's a particular part of a translation that you're stuck on, you are more than welcome to ask for second opinions here as well!

I ended up doing what he suggested - letting it sit for the day then looking over it again later - which I think helped. I appreciate yall's help c:

Help please.
I'm translating pages of deductibles and trying to reduce translations to as small as possible due to a huge spacing issue. How would you translate the following?
[同一生計配偶者で70歳以上の者に係る扶養控除]
扶養控除 = support deductible (according to the law translation website 'support' is what it is)
70 Years & Older Spouse with Same Livelihood Support Deductible?

(One thing I also am considering given the fact that this booklet is all about tax credits/complicated things and what not is clarifying that 'dependents' does not mean you are just sending money to someone and I am concerned that a lot of people who might be reading this in the future will misunderstand this point.)

Has anyone ever interpreted for someone who is an alcoholic and may be drunk during the interpretation? That... does not sound fun. I've interpreted casual conversation between drunk people, but nothing "official"

I honestly think this can go in so many different ways...especially because I have not met this person before.

How would you translate these two swabbing methods for PCR tests? I think the US's FDA would just call both nasal swabs, but there's also a throat swab. The problem is that, one of the images takes fluid from the back of your throat, but people would think all they need to do is ram a swab into their throat instead of having it shoved up their nose. Nasopharyngeal Swab is the deep one that goes all the way back and Anterior nares (or just Nasal) Swab is the swab that’s more toward the front of the nose.

Thank you so much Korokke and Miscreative! Apparently this is for some promotional video and they want me to just translate the words one by one in the order they will appear in the video (like KAGAYAKI / MUGENDAI / MINNADE TSUKURU). I told them that word order in English is different so its gonna be weird af (ie. Limitless Sparkle makes sense, but SPARKLE / LIMITLESS doesnt). But they were like oh thats okay just give us that. urghhh the pain....

So, I just received a pretty big HOMYACK assignment for a few different documents. - 住民票の写し等交付申請書 - 委任状 - 代理権受領確約書 - 戸籍に関する証明書の交付申請書 Examples of each of these other than the 3rd one can be found here: www.city.naha.okinawa.jp/kurasitetuduki/todoke/sinsei/syoumei.html (This is Naha, so while the document is the same, the content and layout is slightly different than the one I'm doing). So, I've figured that since documents like these seem like they're probably pretty commonly used at 市民窓口, there probably exists an English translation for each of them at some other 市町村s out there. Have any of you translated any of the above things for your 市町村 that I can use as reference? If so, is there a way I could see them? Thx and 4649!! Edit for clarification: I'm asking more about whether translations for each of the above documents already exist somewhere in a different 市町村, rather than for translation advice for each of the above terms.

- 委任状
I've translated this as Power of Attorney before
*It basically was a form saying "I give this person the right to file X on my behalf" and that was it minus some standard areas to fill out like one's name.

- 住民票の写し等交付申請書 Application for Copy of Certificate of Residence, etc. - 委任状 Power of Attorney
the others I cannot find immediately
also in the process of double-checking this I found that my city has outdated and extremely clunky English versions uploaded on our website...sigh. I will PM you links anyway for SAMKO (and you will see that titles unfortunately differ from what I told you here but may still become the reference)

I am so not used to translating these kind of greetings. These will be printed on the pamphlet so I srsly need some help. These are the parts I skipped so I can do some work hue 数多くのドラマと名勝負繰り広げられてきました○○大会が、多くの参加者をお迎えし、盛大に開催できますことを心から感謝申し上げますとともに、○○市にお越しいただきました皆様を48万市民を代表して心から歓迎いたします。
I ignored the first part so I just did
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the atheletes who came all the way to ○○ City to participate in the ○○ Competition.
How do I add that drama and 名勝負 part ?!?!
There are more but I will post this one first and hopefully I can have better ideas.

I'm really glad I don't translate many of these kinds of 挨拶 because there just isn't a smooth way to translate that into English. Here are my 2 cents tho I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and welcome to all the athletes who came to oo City to participate in oo Competition, and to the 480,000 citizens who represented oo City during this grand and dramatic competition.

Yo. I googled. I swear.
However, my brain is saying they are all the same.
Can someone else think of ways to differential all four of the following: 予防接種済証 接種記録書 予防接種証明書 接種済証明書
Preventative Vaccination Certificate Vaccination Record Preventative Vaccination Certificate Vaccination Certificate...?
