I just saw this thread.
Irish Pub Always awaits. It's going to be even better this year because I already know a lot of you!
I asked my soup about hotels for Mid-Year Chaos yesterday and she just said "meh, we'll figure it out later." A woman after my own heart.
Maybe I'll just stay at Always.

In defense of useful things at Mid-Year Chaos, I liked the keynote speaker last year, the deaf guy who knew international sign language and talked about seeing and hearing culture. Made me realize how majority people think about foreigners and other minorities (aka they don't).
Hopefully I won't be sick this year and can come out to the meetup!

I suppose when you put it that way it was an interesting keynote, but at the time I remember feeling like it was not relevant at all. "Woman" in International Sign Language was pretty funny, though.

I thought the keynote was interesting as well, but for different reasons.
I may have completely misinterpreted the intent of the keynote, but I thought it was quite profound (for CLIAR, at least) that they brought together hundreds of people who are defined (within the confines of the JET Programme) as foreigners who can speak Japanese and reminded them that there's more to communication than just words.

Exactly what Graeme said (not sure if you meant that as a good thing or a bad thing though..)
The keynote is supposed to just be interesting and get you thinking a little bit--it's going to be abstract and not immediately applicable to your situation like the workshops are. So that's why I liked that it made me realize why we as CIRs are necessary, because we can point out what doesn't occur to fluent native-speakers (just as the speaker pointed out what doesn't occur to hearing people). It helped jolt me out of that "Japanese people are just racist and actively hate us" phase that I think a lot of us fall in and out of.
I had a lot of brainblasts when I attended a sign language circle for a while. We usually picture Japanese as so calm and reserved but these people were so expressive with their faces and bodies and it was so refreshing. Another example of how Japanese people are not monolithic in culture and language, and how deaf culture really is a different culture than hearing culture.

Well, it was also my first Mid-Year Chaos and it was the opening event, so I guess it just wasn't in line with what I was expecting. I'll try harder this year to see what the speaker is trying to convey.

No worries, everyone has to interpret the conference their own way! Sometimes it's hard to see what the speaker is getting at but honestly I never enjoyed or got the point of keynote speakers until I started organizing conferences myself D:

I'll try harder this year to see what the speaker is trying to convey. Sometimes they're not really conveying anything. 2013's had some lady just talking about Filipinos (?) working in Sendai as nurses. Then she played a sad montage of the 2011 earthquake - because that is Sendai now.

I did not really enjoy the one about Mikan Land a while ago, did not really give me anything. Ahaha the mikans and Indonesia (right?). I definitely fell asleep during that one. Proof that last year's keynote was good: I stayed awake during the whole thing.

Shimanchu 2024 please you're blowing my cover PS that 参加 was complete improv because my "group" was like "hue you'd just use your mobile phone innit" and although I tried to suggest that wasn't the point of the exercise they ignored me AND OF COURSE WE GOT PICKED TO GO UP FIRST AND OF COURSE NONE OF THE GROUP (all of whom were my senpais) MADE A MOVE TO GET UP SO THERE I WAS ON THE STAGE WITH NO PLAN AND A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE WATCHING AAAAaaahhh I wanted to forget about that traumatic experience Boss. Also I didn't notice this thread until now? Thanks for drawing my attention I guess

Ividia if it makes you feel any better I have absolutely no recollection of it being you up there or what you did. I don't even remember what our groupwork was supposed to be or who I was sitting with. (Sorry if it was any of you, I have a very bad memory) -.-'

I remember an Asian CIR of mystery affiliation going "日本語がすごい上手!!" and being filled with an intense, jealous rage.
